Kamandurg stands tall and proud to be the second highest fort in Thane district and still has some signs of the ancient times. This fort is special in its own way by having a gradual steep climb of about 2.30 hrs through dense forest, rock cut steps but in spite of that is rarely visited. Kamandurg played an important role during the battle of Vasai and the main aim it was built for was to keep an eye on the trade carried through Ulhas river.

History :
A reference to this fort can be found in “Mahakavti Bakhar” of the 11th century which states it as “Kamvandurg”. This fort was built to protect the trade route of Ulhas river from Kalyan creek port. In 1683, Sambhaji Maharaj won this fort from the Portuguese and later on 12th September, 1685 they won it back. Due to non availability of adequate water on the fort, the Portuguese had to abandon the fort. During the Peshwa-Portuguese war of 1737, Shankarji Keshav wrote a letter to the Peshwas to rehabilitate the fort as its location is quite crucial standing very near to the Portuguese land and it can be used to keep a hold on the Kalyan-Bhiwandi route. Later, two water tanks were built and the old ones were repaired which made the fort fit for rehabilitation.
Fascinating Spots :

The summit of the fort can be clearly seen surpassing two hills from the base village, Belkundi. After crossing these two hills we reach the main mountain range of the fort where we have the first sight of rock cut steps. We enter the fort through a ruined doorway and from here we can see the fort summit which is further 100 ft high. There are no remains on the fort except some water tanks. There are five water tanks built in rock which contain potable water till January on the way to these tanks there is a statue carved in stone which has 2 women with earrings sculpted in it. Local villagers say that there are similar sculptures on the back side of the fort. A trail passing by the wwater tanks takes us to the fort top. Here, on the way there is a water tank built in the Satvahana Era. Rock cut steps further lead us to the fort top. Tungareshwar, Gumtara fort, Vasai creek and area uptil Dharavi are visible from the summit.

Ways To Reach :

1) One has to get down at Kaman station on the Diva-Vasai railway line. The train halts at Dombivli station at 5.20 am and reached Kama at 6.05 am. 2) Kaman is 22 kms from Bhiwandi on the Bhiwandi-Vasai road. 3) Autorickshaws from Naigaon station on the western railway can take you to Chinchpada from where another auto ride can be taken to reach Kaman village. One route in Kaman village passes by Syndicate bank and further leads to Belkundi village. TO reach Belkundi pada one has to take a right turn near the milestone which shows “Belkundi 1 km”. this route further takes us to Kamandurg. During monsoons we have to cross two streams on the way. Walking further from here the route coming from Devkundi village joins us.

Notes :

The ascend to this fort is steep. Steps built in rock on the last part of the ascend get very hot when exposed to the sun as there is no vegetation cover here. Thus it is recommended to ascend this fort during early morning. In 2010, Trekshitiz Sanstha had marked arrows on the route at regular intervals which makes it easy to trail the path. Otherwise local guides can be taken from the village.
