| Waghera is one of the sixteen fortified places that went in the hands of Colonel McDowell's force on the fall of Trimbak in 1818.When the fort was taken by the Britishers it had a large supply of ammunition and stores the water-supply in the fort was throughout the year.
The way up the fort is vertical and difficult. It leads to two entrances, the outer entrance of which has two bastions. Both the gates as well as the bastions are in poor condition. Captain Briggs found many thatched huts for the forts but not a single bomb-proof for ammunition and precaution.
Captain Briggs who visited Waghera in 1818 rode almost to the foot of the fort without any difficulty. Here he found a few houses occupied by a part of the fort. The fort taken was the north fort, besides which there were a center fort containing the tanks and huts, and a south fort. From the latter, hundreds of families were streaming out, protected by a fire of matchlock men.
The next attack, on Major Honner's left, looking at the hills from Bhanwar, was from the other side of Moorpoor, and consisted of four mountain train guns, manned by Golundauze and 6 or 7 Grenadiers, and each gun attended by 100 of the 14th N.I., the whole under Captain Hill.
The ascent of the hill up which these guns were dragged was difficult even for empty handed men, and the feat that was achieved in getting them into position cannot be overrated, especially as their fire was somewhat hotly contested.Still further to the left were posted Lieutenant Hallet with 50 Grenadiers, under Lieutenant Maunsel, with 40 of his men.
They were to assist the Joonaghur See bundee in taking the Dantal hill, 12 or 14 miles from the Ubbpoora. The See bundee, however, fought shy, greatly to the disgust of their master and his minister.
