Introduction

Chapora fort is in North Goa near Vagator beach. The main aim of this fort was to protect the trade on Chapora river. The bollywood hindi movie ‘Dil Chahata Hain’ was filmed on this fort which got this fort into limelight.

Historical Background

Adilshah built this fort on the banks of Chapora river. It’s construction was completed in 1617 and was named as Shahpura. This fort was with the rulers of Pernem and the Sawants of Sawantwadi for two years. The portuguese won this fort in 1717 and refurbished its structure. The importance of this fort declined after 1892.

How to Reach

The fort is 18 kms from Thivim railway station and 1.5 km from Vagator beach.

Points of Interest

There is a proper paved road built till the base of the fort after which a 10 minute trail leads us to the fort entrance facing south-east. The fort has three round shaped and four arrow shaped bastions and a structure in ruins which was earlier St.Anthony Church. There is also a capsule shaped bastion on the fort and in total there are four entrances to the fort.
