Introduction

This fort rests on the banks of Hidkal dam in Belgaum district. Honnur fort is surrounded by water on its three side due to the dam which gives it a picturesque view.

How to Reach

On the Mumbai – Banglore highway while coming towards Mumbai from Belgaum there is a diversion for Hidkal dam. 12 kms from this junction to the right side there is a junction for Vithal bhavan circuit house and we have to alight here for the fort.

Points of Interest

There is a circuit house built at half the height of the fort and it can be accessed by a proper tar road. The fort can be viewed as we alight over here. We reach the fortified wall in about 5 minutes. As we move ahead by keeping the fort wall to ur left and bypassing three bastions we come across a Gomukhi type fort entrance. There are two strongly built bastions on its either sides. The fort wall and its bastions are built in red stones. As we enter the fort we can have a bird’s eye view of its entire area. As the main purpose of this fort was for watch keeping there aren’t any structures found on the fort. To the west of the fort is Honnur village. The flag mast bastion is on the west side of the fort. Near this there is a path which descends to Honnur village. It is estimated that there could be a doorway here in the past.

The entire fort can be covered in 15 minutes.
