Introduction

Rawlya – Jawlya are forts located near Mulane village, 50 km north of Nashik on SH17. These resemble each other and are twin forts. The forts are tough to ascend and rope is necessary to climb Rawlya.

How to Reach

To reach the plateau of these forts, we have reach village Mulane, which is located on Vani – Kalwan link road. Vani is located 43 km north of Nashik on SH22. We can also get down in before Mulane, half an hour ahead of Babapur on the ridge connecting the twin forts and Markandya fort. From the ridge we can reach the plateau.

Points of Interest

These forts are located atop mountain cap, which is near Babapur village. The road which goes from Babapur towards Mulane goes through the ridge which connects Markandya on west to the plateau of Rawlya – Jawlya on the east. Once we ascend the mountain, we can continue waling till we reach the base of the forts, a place between both where few people stay.

Rawlya

The trail to Rawlya starts before we reach the houses, and is tough to find, better to take local assistance if needed. On this trail we reach a cavern where there is a natural chimney in the rock to climb up. To reach the top of Rawlya, we need a rope after we climb this chimney. There are few remnants and dried up cisterns on the top.

Jawlya

This one is comparatively less tough, as the trail to this fort is quite clear and there are rock cut steps to reach the top. The trail from the base goes over the trunk of the mountain, and leads to the rock cut steps. We can also see some abandoned rock cut caves. The steps lead to the main entrance of the fort, where we find a stone inscription. If we go to the left side as we enter, we can see some caves and cisterns there. If we return to the top and go to the other side of the fort, there are rock cut water cisterns. None of these cisterns have potable water. The view from both these forts is breath-taking. From Jawlya, we can see forts Dhodap, Ikhara, Kanhergad, Kanchna and Indrai.
