Sitabuldi fort is near Nagpur railway station. In 1817, the Bhosales of Nagpur and the British fought a battle in the fort premises in which the British emerged victorious. The fort complex is currently under the control of Indian Army and thus not all parts of the fort are accessible for common masses. Also many structural changes have been made to suit the requirements of the Indian Army. The fort can be visited only on 26th January, 01st May and 15th August from 9 am till 3 pm. Lot of people visit during these days and thus it makes the fort very crowded.
Historical Background
The original name of this fort was Shitalabadri which was derived from the names of two rulers from the Yadav clan - Shitalaprasad and Badriprasad. In the course of time the fort was called by its present name. After the uprising of 1857, the British hanged Nawab Kadar, the grandson of Tipu Sultan and his 8 companions in this fort. Mahatma Gandhi was also imprisoned in this fort by the British during 10th April to 15th May 1923. King George V and Queen Mary had also visited this fort.
Points of Interest
The fort is spread over two hills, one small and other big. The path inside the fort has been built by blasting the rocks. There are some structures which were built during the British rule. There is a pillar further on this path to the left which was built as a tribute to King George V and Queen Mary who had visited this fort. Moving ahead from the pillar we come across the second entrance of the fort. This entrance looks like a cave and has steps inside. These steps lead us to the Masjid of Baba Navgaj Ali which was built in the memory of Tipu Sultan’s grandson and his companions who were hanged here. Mahatma Gandhi was imprisoned in the building which is opposite to this Masjid and further to this building to the left there is another entrance of the fort but it is prohibited to visit. There is a trench built on the inside of the fortified wall and as we move ahead there is a well. There are canons on the fort from the British era. Outside the door which lies on the exit of the fort, there is a large canon which was discovered in 2014.
