Introduction
Bhagawati Mandir is an ancient temple dedicated to Goddess Bhagawati, located at Kotkamate village in Devgad taluka of Sindhudurg district.
History
According to legend, Kanhoji Angre vowed to build a grand temple and donate villages to the deity if he emerged victorious in battle. After his victory, he constructed the Bhagawati temple and donated Salshi, Achara, Kamte and Kinjawade villages. A stone inscription inside the temple records this event.
Notes
Three inverted cannons are buried outside the temple, and remains of Kotkamate fort bastion can be seen nearby.
