Introduction

Bhimashankar is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, situated at an altitude of around 3500 feet amidst dense forests of the Sahyadri range.

Religious Importance

Bhimashankar holds immense religious importance as one of the twelve sacred Jyotirlingas in India and is also a popular trekking destination.

History

According to Puranic legends, Tripurasura performed penance in these forests. Shiva and Parvati in Ardhanarishwara form destroyed Tripurasura on Kartik Purnima.

Architecture

The original temple is around 1200–1400 years old and built in Hemadpanthi style. The sabhamandap and shikhara were added by Nana Phadnavis in the 18th century.

How to Reach

Bhimashankar can be reached via road from Pune or Mumbai through Ghodegaon. ST buses and private vehicles are available.

Ganesh Ghat, Shidi Ghat, Gughal Ghat, Ahupe Ghat and motorable road route

Notes

A Portuguese bell from 1729 donated by Chimaji Appa hangs in front of the temple. The origin of Bhima river is near the temple.
