Introduction

Jarabeshwar Mandir is an ancient temple located in Phaltan city of Satara district, standing prominently near the royal palace and Shri Ram temple.

Religious Importance

The temple is significant for its Hemadpanthi architecture and its earlier association with Jain tradition, later converted into a Shaiva shrine.

History

The temple is believed to have originally been a Jain temple, as indicated by the carvings of twenty-four Tirthankaras and the Jain idol on the lalatbimba. During the period of Mudhojiraje Nimbalkar IV (1853–1916), a Shiva linga was स्थापित in the sanctum.

Architecture

The north-facing temple consists of a sanctum and entrance mandapa. The sanctum has carvings of twenty-four Tirthankaras on the ceiling slab. Sculptures of Ashtadikpalas, Surasundaris, Vitthal–Rukmini, Nandi, tortoise, Ganapati, and a five-hooded serpent are notable.

How to Reach

Phaltan is well connected by road. Pune–Phaltan distance is about 110 km and Satara–Phaltan distance is about 65 km.

Notes

Several erotic (Maithuna) sculptures on the outer walls have suffered damage over time.
