Introduction

Kunkeshwar Mandir is a serene coastal temple village located in Sindhudurg district, famous for its ancient Shiva temple situated on the seashore.

Religious Importance

The temple is significant for its ancient Yadava-era origin and its association with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Sambhaji Maharaj who renovated the temple.

History

The temple was originally built in the 11th century during the Yadava period. According to a legend, a Muslim trader caught in a storm vowed to build a temple if saved. After surviving, he constructed the temple but later committed suicide fearing social ostracism. His tomb still exists beside the temple.

Architecture

The temple is built on a high plinth to withstand sea waves. The stepped outer structure absorbs wave impact. The architecture follows the Dravidian style with a multi-tiered square shikhara and mandapa.

How to Reach

Kunkeshwar is 39 km from Malvan. From Mumbai–Goa highway, take the Nandgaon–Devgad road and follow the diversion to Kunkeshwar.

Notes

The tomb of the Muslim trader is located beside the temple, making it a unique historical feature.
