Introduction

Laxmi Narayan Mandir is an ancient temple located in Walawal village of Sindhudurg district, surrounded by hills, forests, and the Karli river.

Religious Importance

The temple is historically important due to its association with Shilahara rulers, Vijayanagar influence, and the Naroba–Mauli legend.

History

Originally known as Ballavalli, Walawal served as a refuge for rulers and officials. In the 11th century, Shilahara kings resided here. The idol of Lord Narayan was brought from Harmal in Goa and the temple was established between 1350 and 1400 AD.

Architecture

The temple follows Chalukyan architectural style. The standing black stone idol of Lord Narayan is about 4 feet tall, flanked by Goddess Laxmi and Garuda. The hall features carved wooden pillars, mythological panels, a Gandabherunda symbol, five deepmalas, and the memorial of Kalyan Purush.

How to Reach

Walawal is 10 km from Kudal and 30 km from Malvan. ST buses and rickshaws are available from Kudal.

Notes

The Vaikuntha Chaturdashi procession and Gandabherunda carving are unique highlights of the temple.
