Introduction
Mahadev Mandir is an ancient Hemadpanthi temple located about 1.5 km from the Gautala Wildlife Sanctuary gate near Patanadevi. The temple stands on a stone platform in a serene forested environment.
Religious Importance
The temple is an excellent example of Hemadpanthi architecture and forms an important religious landmark in the Patanadevi–Kanhergad region.
History
The temple dates back to the Hemadpanthi period. Over time, exposure to sun, rain and wind has caused erosion of the outer sculptures.
Architecture
The east-facing temple is built on an 8-foot high stone platform. It consists of a sanctum, sabhamandap and veranda. Sculptures of Ganapati and Saptamatrikas are carved on the sanctum doorway.
How to Reach
From Chalisgaon, Patanadevi is 18 km away. From the sanctuary gate, Mahadev Mandir is located 1.5 km ahead, reached by turning right from the main road.
Notes
The temple measures approximately 75 ft in length, 36 ft in width and 18 ft in height, with a Nandi idol placed in the sabhamandap.
