Tambadi Surla Shiva Temple

Goa October to March
Tambadi Surla Mandir First

Introduction

Tambadi Surla Shiva Temple is a 12th-century ancient temple located at the foothills of Anmod Ghat inside Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary and Mollem National Park in Goa.

Religious Importance

It is the oldest and best-preserved surviving temple in Goa, untouched by medieval invasions due to its remote forest location.

History

The temple dates back to the 12th century. Some scholars believe it was built by Hemadri, a minister of Yadava king Ramachandra, following Jain architectural principles, while the region was largely under Kadamba rule from the 10th to 14th century.

Architecture

Built in the Bhumija style, the temple is constructed entirely of black basalt stone. It consists of a Nandi mandapa, antarala, and sanctum. The pillars feature lotus, creeper, animal, and Kirtimukha carvings. The sanctum houses a finely carved Shiva Linga with continuous water flow.

How to Reach

From Panaji, travel via Honda to Valpoi. From Valpoi, take the road towards Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary. The temple lies about 7 km inside the sanctuary.

Notes

The temple’s intact carvings and incomplete shikhara work provide rare insight into early Deccan temple architecture.
