Ankush

Introduction

Ankush is a traditional tool used by mahouts to control elephants. It consists of three main parts: a sharp spike at the top, a semicircular hook below it, and a handle.

Historical Background

Specially crafted Ankushes were used for royal elephants and were often ornate. Many Ankushes feature carvings of elephants and crocodiles, reflecting mythological stories. Ankush is also depicted as a weapon in the hand of Lord Ganesha, symbolizing control and guidance.

Notes

Royal Ankushes were decorative and symbolically significant. The spike and hook portion was usually metal, while the handle was made of wood, metal, or ivory.
