Chilkhat (Armour)

Introduction

Chilkhat is a protective armour designed to safeguard the chest and head from enemy attacks. Dastan was used to protect hands from wrist to elbow.

Historical Background

The earliest armour was made from thick cloth, later replaced by leather. During the Iron Age, chain armour made of metal rings came into use. Initially iron rings were used, later replaced by steel rings. Eventually, even elephants and horses were armoured.

Usage in India

Chilkhat was widely used in medieval Indian warfare. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj wore chain armour under his angarkha during his meeting with Afzal Khan.
