History :
This fort is built on the northern bank of Mandvi river.in the 17th century there was a huge competition between the Dutch and the Portuguese rulers for dominance over trade. In 1604, the Dutch merchants blocked the Portuguese ships on the mouth of Mandvi river. The two canons, Ris Magos on the northern bank and Gasper Dias on the southern bank of the river were not successful in blocking the Portuguese ships.

To break this blockade, the Portuguese, in 1606, built Aguada fort on the northern bank of Mandvi river and Mormugao fort on the mouth of Zuari river.
Fascinating Spots :

The fort is surrounded by a trench from three sides which is built by rocks. The bridge on the trench takes us into the fort from the Eastern side. There is a lamp post just after we enter the fort. Till 1976 there was an old lamp post in its place. The hill on which the fort is built is called Aguada point. The bastions on the fort are arrow shaped. There is a basement room in the fort in which a 90 lakh liters capacity water tank. There are many streams in the hill and the water of which gets eventually collected in this huge tank. This tank is restricted for visit. The ridge of the hill has been protected by a fortified wall and bastions. From the platform of the wall we can visit the entire fort premise.

To visit the lower Aguada fort we have to go via another 3 km long route and reach the Sinquerim beach near Taj Fort Aguada Hotel. Here we can see a round shape bastion in the sea and 2 triangular bastions along with its fortified wall. This area is also called Sinquerim fort.
