Introduction

Amalner is a town situated in the banks of the Bori River in the Jalgaon district. In the past, Amalner was protected by a walled fortification surrounding it, giving it some safeguard and protection against invasions and attacks. These kinds of cities are commonly termed as “walled cities”. One side of the town was protected naturally by the Bori River, which was further strengthened by raising walls and bastions along the edge of the river. The other three sides were protected by thick 20 feet high walls and 3 well guarded entrances

Historical Background

We do not have details about the origin or creation of this walled town. Amalner came under the administration of Madhavrao who was the then representative of the Peshwa in AD 1818. At the instructions of the Peshwa, Madhavrao decided to hand over the fort to the British. Ali who was the Jamadaar of the fort and the Arab Battalion under his supervision, however, opposed this decision. Col Haskins of the British army brought a battalion of the Bhills to Amalner and started bombarding the fort from beyond the riverside. Ali Jamadar and his troops gave a stiff resistance though they were surrounded on all the four sides by the British troops. The British also waylaid the food grains and gunpowder which was being sent to the fort from Bahadurpur which was situated to the south of the fort, thus cutting off all supplies to the people inside. This forced Ali Jamadar and his troops to try to escape the siege by running away along the riverfront but were arrested and taken into custody by the British

How to Reach

Amalner being an important town in Jalgaon is connected both by road and rail to various parts of the country.

Points of Interest

Amalner was once a fortified town. Due to the rapid development of the town, the fort of Amalner is now situated inside the town itself. The 20 ft high Buland Darwaza and the bastion next to it can be seen inside the town. The road passing through this entrance leads up to the Samadhi of Sant Sakharam on the banks of the river. If one goes down the river bed, the walls of the fort and the houses erected on the top of the walls comes into view. You can also see the bastions on the right hand side from the riverbed. When returning back to the entrance of the fort, one comes across the two storied house of the Deshmukh filled with beautiful paintings.
