Thalner fort was built on the banks of river Tapi. This fort which has been a witness to many glorious reigns, currently stands in a sorry condition due to inattentiveness by the locals and government authorities. The famous singer of India Ms. Lata Mangeshkar had her grandparents from Thalner.

Thalner
History :
During 1128 A.D the control of this fort was with Jivaji and Govaji of Gavli or Ahir family. Devgiri’s King, Bajirao’s son Daulatrao awarded the control of this fort to Jivaji and Govaji when he had visited Thalner and noticed that the fort was well maintained while the other 23 forts in the nearby region were in ruins
In 1370 A.D. Ferozeshah Tughlak won the area of Khandesh and appointed Malikraja Faruki to administer the region of Gujarat. Thalner was made his capital center. The very next year the Sultan of Gujarat attacked Malikraja and captured his territory and Malikraja took refuge in Thalner fort. After his death in 1497 A.D. the control was passed on to his second son. This went against the will of the first son who then alongwith the support of Sultan of Malwa attacked Thalner and took it under his control in 1417 A.D.
In 1418 A.D. the Sultan of Gujarat Mohammed Begada captured Thalner and looted the nearby provinces and in 1511 A.D. he handed over half of Khandesh region to his commander in chief Malik Hasanuddin. He allegedly got murdered the next year.
In 1566 A.D. Changez Khan who was the Sultan of Gujarat defeated the King of Khandesh Miran Mohammed. The control of this fort went to Akbar in 1600 A.D. and during this period the fort was prosperous and had vital importance being on the trade route of Surat-Burhanpur.

In 1750 A.D. when the Peshwas took over the fort it was handed over to the Holkars and then it was further passed on to the Nimbalkars in 1800 A.D. however the Holkars took it back the very next year.
The British General Sir Thomas Hissop encountered a bloody massacre when he went to conquer the fort in 1818 A.D.
This conquest is known to be one of the bloodiest conquests in history. Around 250 Maratha and 25 British soldiers were killed in this war.
Fascinating Spots :

Thalner fort is vested on the hill on the banks of Tapi river where she takes a Horse shoe turn. This hill is about 100 meters in height. Sadly the fort stands in ruins today and only the 60 feet high wall which is built of bricks near the Pataleshwar temple and two bastions are intact. Rest all other structures have been dilapidated. There are two small temples on the fort of Goddess Saptashrungi and the other is empty. Although there is nothing much to see on the fort, there are two places which can be visited in the village.

1) Jamadar Wada – While approaching Pataleshwar Shankar Temple from the village we come across a small fort like structure which is called Jamadar Wada. Presently it’s a residence for many families. There are 4 bastions built on the four corners with each being 12 feet high. The entrance door is 20 feet high and is studded with nails. The entrance is made of wood and has beautiful carvings on it. The houses inside this structure also have beautiful wooden carved windows and other parts too. There is a small room in the basement of this small fort with steps built for its access. The people living in this premise do us a tour and introduction of the structure but sadly they are unaware of its historical facts. Besides the entrance door there are two names writtem viz; Ramsingh and Guman Singh.

2) 10 Kabri- Literally known as 10 graves, this is a group of graves of the persons deceased in the Faruki family and other important personalities. One of the grave is Octagonal and has a scripture written in Arabic language. All other graves are of uniform size and shape (11x11 ft.)

Of those graves, details of only 4 are know which are noted as below:-
1. Malik Raja (1396)
2. Malik Nasir (1437)
3. Miran Adilshah (1441)
4. Miran Mubarak Khan (1457)
